Message from the Vice Chancellor
Welcome to the University of
Barishal (বরিশাল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়).
The
University of Barishal was established through the long-standing aspiration of
the people of the Barishal. Since the 1960s, citizens,
educators, and community leaders consistently had demanded for a public
university to expand higher education opportunities and support the
socio-economic development of the Barishal region. This vision received
national recognition in 1978 when President Ziaur Rahman expressed support for
establishing a university in Barishal, classifying the strategic importance of
higher education in promoting regional development and reducing educational disparities.
Over the following decades, public demand for a university continued to grow,
eventually leading to concrete legislative initiatives. The formal process
began with the enactment of the Barisal University of Science and Technology
Act, 2001. Later, the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman University, Barisal Act, 2006 was
passed, and the proposed institution was renamed in honor of former President
Ziaur Rahman. Subsequently, the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman University, Barisal
(Amendment) Act, 2010 renamed the institution as the University of Barishal.
Following a change in government, the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman University, Barisal
(Amendment) Act, 2010 was passed, and the institution was renamed the
University of Barishal, reflecting a broader regional identity. The amended Act
was enacted on 16 June 2010, administrative activities formally commenced on 1
July 2011, and academic operations began on 24 January 2012. Since its
inception, the University of Barishal has remained committed to excellence in
teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement.
Barishal is
a land uniquely shaped by the harmonious coexistence of rice (ধান), rivers (নদী), and canals (খাল). The spirit of "ধান-নদী-খাল"
also reflects the values that guide our university. The rice fields symbolize productivity,
abundance, and food security; the rivers represent progress, exploration, and
the continuous pursuit of knowledge; while the canals signify connectivity,
collaboration, and the sharing of ideas across disciplines and communities.
Together, they inspire us to cultivate wisdom, foster innovation, and
strengthen our commitment to serving society.
Research,
innovation, and student development are at the core of our mission. We are
committed to fostering a vibrant academic environment that promotes scholarly
excellence, creativity, and lifelong learning. Through quality education,
impactful research, and industry-academic collaborative initiatives, we seek to address
contemporary challenges in areas such as sustainable development, climate
resilience, digital transformation, public health, and entrepreneurship. At the
same time, we encourage our students to develop leadership, teamwork, and
ethical values. As we move forward, we remain dedicated to excellence, good
governance, inclusiveness, transparency, and meaningful engagement with
society.
It is a
great honor and privilege to serve as the Vice Chancellor of the University of
Barishal, one of the most promising public universities in Bangladesh. I firmly
believe that the future success of our university depends upon the collective
efforts of our students, faculty members, officers, staff, alumni,
policymakers, and development partners. Let us work together to advance
knowledge, inspire innovation, and shape a brighter future for Bangladesh and
the world. Finally, I extend a warm welcome to visitors from home and abroad to
visit our official website. I invite you to explore our academic programs,
research achievements, and community engagement initiatives, and to join us in
our pursuit of excellence.
